Out of ideas, Roni turns to the only “expert” he trusts completely — Annie herself. He spins her a tale about a gnome who left the cube as a gift only she can open. When Annie simply asks the box to open “please,” it responds: the top splits into four hinged triangles, revealing an intricate pattern of curved lines and bluish-silver squares inside. Through a series of playful experiments — tossing in a toy, sorting the box’s reactions like gummy-bear traffic lights (red for “no,” green/blue for “yes”) — grandfather and granddaughter develop a simple system for communicating with it. When they slip in a blank sheet of paper, it comes back etched with a mysterious spiral symbol. The chapter closes on a note of secrecy and wonder, with Annie instinctively keeping the discovery just between the two of them.
