Roni, a senior CAD/CAM engineer nearing a long-awaited three-month sabbatical, survives one last chaotic week at work before his vacation finally begins. Left in charge of his five-year-old granddaughter Annie during the day, he takes an early morning walk on the beach and stumbles on a strange object half-buried in the sand: a small, perfectly smooth, coal-black cube that resists every attempt to open it — magnifying glass, screwdriver, diamond engraving tool, even a hammer. Convinced it might be something extraordinary (his mind jumps to 2001: A Space Odyssey), he hides it in his desk and, out of stubbornness rather than logic, tries increasingly absurd methods — including blasting it with Beatles songs and then Schoenberg — all without success. The chapter ends with him refusing to give up.
