Across Depression-era rail lines, wartime Detroit streets, and the quiet refuge of a small lakeshore town, this sweeping saga traces a boy’s hard passage into manhood beneath the shadow of a violent, wounded father and the aching absence of a mother kept at a distance. Hunger, cruelty, prejudice, and abandonment scar his childhood, yet love persists—in a sister’s fragile trust, a brother’s vow, books, friendship, music, work, and the stubborn kindness of ordinary people. Rich in memory and historical texture, it is a tender, unsparing portrait of inheritance, resilience, and the grace of forging belonging from damage.

George C. Wilson is the namesake son of Big George Wilson, the subject of this novel. George C. is a retired school librarian and coach. Two Trains From Scottville is his second novel. He is the author of the novel Owen 9, a humorous account of a winless season by a horrible high school football team.
George C. is married to Ellen Bristol, and they live in suburban Grand Rapids, Michigan. George C., Ellen and George the 6th—Big George’s namesake grandson, known as Grady—are all members of the Scottville Clown Band. George C. is the primary street leader and MC for the band. The Clown Band is the legacy of Big George Wilson and his contemporaries, who formed it in 1947. It is still going strong nearly 80 years later, and its origin story and first performance are the subject of a chapter of this novel.
