These often luminous essays indeed let time go lightly by at dinner tables, hospital rooms, foreign streets, old films, beloved books and their authors, wars and their tragic consequences remembered, animals cared for, friendships sustained, and sometimes grief expressed with great wit and tenderness. Through the writer’s eyes you experience the comedy and ache of ordinary days in marriage, meals, travel, death and the consolation of art. They all add up to meditations of intimate and often comedic moments in the relentless passage of time.
