Fear of Uncertainty

from Curtstride by

It’s just such a shame that we can’t look through a mirror and predict what our future will bring. Anything could happen in life, and it’s not fair if you don’t perceive it at first. You can get into a car accident, lose your job, fall off a mountain, fail a college test, win the lottery and never work again, or break up in a relationship – anything can happen. There are just endless possibilities in this world.

If you think about it, I don’t believe it’s uncertainty that brings the fear and anxiety; instead, it has to be our desire for uncertainty and our inability to confront it directly.

Life is not predetermined, so there will always be an element of uncertainty.

The most significant uncertainty about life would be “death”. The doctor can tell the cancer patient how many months he’s got left, but the doctor does not notice the date and time of his passing. It’s not for sure that you get the job you need or the award that you may deserve, or even make a destination trip to your favorite vacation spot. Sometimes you’re so sure you know something is going to happen, but the next day you find yourself with the opposite result.  Very unpredictable ways of everyday life.

Life is certain because it’s temporary, but this temporary situation is not too short to be worried about, but by no means should it be overlooked.

Now, of course, we indulge certainty because the mind wants that complete control. And that is truly our survival instinct at work. And then after that, nothing is specific. We don’t even know how our next breath would operate.

This is very common for anyone who would like to know what the desires of such a way of life will bring, if they could only understand what tomorrow would look like.

Dealing with life uncertainties requires developing mental resilience, focusing on what you can control, and accepting what you can’t. Uncertainty will always be part of life, and the more you resist it, the more anxious you feel.

Here’s the thing about fear that you need to understand. The word itself is merely a condition created by our ego, intended to protect us in general. In actuality, we do not need protection because people are only fearful of the future because they’re living in their past. Rumination has programmed us to react in specific ways to the unknown that we face. So we see the future with the same vision as we see the past. When a person is fearful, they tend to refuse to try something due to the outcome that they don’t understand.

You know, anxiety, for lack of a better word, is a very close relation to fear, and fear tends to spin off its anxiety. So one must ask: What are you afraid of in this present moment? The answer may surprise you.

Some people have a great fear of their past, which manifests in the present. Any uncertainty from anyone is a common fear in itself. And we like to have our lives to be predictable and stable at a steady pace. You don’t want to feel groundless and vulnerable, as you can fall to pieces if the simple rug is pulled from under your feet.

But living with so much uncertainty must be hard. People often desire information about the future, much like they crave water, food, sex, and other primary rewards. And while our brains perceive confusion or ambiguity as a threat, the mind protects us by diminishing our abilities to focus on anything other than creating that certainty.

Please take it as you want; the anxiety of an unknown future is a common human condition. There are people that you see who are comfortable and well off, yet they still suffer from anxiety about the future, despite looking the other way. And it’s probably caused by an insatiable ego and its attachment to a sense of self. Anything that threatens this can bring on anxiety anyway.
